"If Virgin Mary would've had an abortion
I'd still be carried in a chariot by stampeding horses
Had to bring it back to New York
I'm happy that the streets is back in New York
For you rappers, I carry the cross..."

Tonight was stakeout night and that meant one thing: Halo was driving. And, if Halo was driving, that means Halo was in charge of the radio, hence the unrepentantly loud hip-hop blaring from the car speakers. Normally, such behavior would have been deemed counter-productive to a stakeout like the sort currently in play, but that was before one stopped to weigh it against the backdrop itself. It was a Saturday night in the city and midtown was the place to be for the party-goers of all sorts. It catered to all types, from the typical drunken partygirl to the guys who combed their hair in sync. Truly, it took all sorts.

Especially the unsavory.

The local police reports told of a string of seemingly unconnected incidents ranging from kidnappings to strange attacks that left the victims otherwise unharmed save for strange markings on their bodies. To an outside observer it seemed that these events were unrelated and random at best. But to those in the know, it was much more; something was going down. The signs all pointed to it. Thus this night saw the trio of Halo, Iwan and Blake all bunched up in his jet black Camaro [he wasn't into those fancy modern cars with microchips in them], being entertained by the rousing urban savvy of one Nas Escobar.

One of Halo's favorite M.C.'s

Thankfully, with the two of them keeping him company, he'd not have to deal with Tirium's pitter-patter alone... that didn't mean the Demon would be quiet though. "Ah! Lookit that one...! Whooo, if that dress was any shorter..." Halo, forgetting the others could not hear Tirium's wry comments, made the mistake of replying. "Yea. These girls nowadays; talk about not being a sexual object then do whatever they can to be a sexual object... Tch!" More into mature women who didn't need to walk around half-naked all day long, this sort of thing rubbed him the wrong way; reaching for his carton of smokes, he quickly offered one to Blake and Iwan if they wanted and placed them back on the dashboard. "I do wonder sometimes though... that metal chick ya run with these days; wonder if it's all steel down there or...??"

"Don't let 'Wan hear you say that..."

"Pft! How would she? You forget only YOU can hear me... and speaking of hearing things, wonder what sound her cheeks'll make when she's twerkin'! Hah hah! Like two cheeks clapping or two steel pipes...!"

"She the fuck up about Iwan's butt.. tryin' to watch the crowd..." Halo's quick brushing away of Tirium's childish musings upset the Demon somewhat.

"Yer as gay as Blake over there...." Halo inhaled, keeping his eye on the crowd.

"Blake isn't gay far as I know... so shut it, or I turn on Radio Disney. And sign along." That shut him up. "Sometimes I'm tempted to just cut my entire arm off with this guy... Hm?" Amid his complaint, he notices an odd figure in the crowd; slightly over-dressed for a party on such a chilly night, slightly out-of-place against the haze of people moving from one bar or club to the next. Yet they just stood there, like a living statue amongst a sea of endless movement. Halo kept his eye on the figure who at this point he could not tell if they were male or female or even human; he nudged Blake and pointed to the tall, titan of a figure. "You see what I see? 'Wan, what does your eye say about that one over there?"

He'd let Iwan do her thing before deciding of this was their guy or not; balls to the barn he would bet he was, though. Call it a gut feeling...

(OOC: Figured we could take down a nest of some sort; dunno what, you guys can add to this as you wish!)

Narasaki Village, Japan
Sunday, 2:30 p.m.

It was the night of the Plum Festival, a special night where the locals believed the spirits of their ancestors as well as the many benevolent spirits of the surrounding forest would visit them and bestow their thanks and blessings upon those who kept to the old ways and honored the long-standing traditions laid out before them, but mostly paid tribute to the forest and its life-giving presence. Indeed, the peoples of the Narasaki village maintained a deep, devout relationship with the land of their birth, giving thanks to it for its firm, reliable earth and fresh, pure waters. And, on such a night of celebration and thanks, it would be nothing short of blasphemy to ignore the centerpiece of it all. Yet, however near and dear, mankind will never truly know the ways of the spirit world.

Mankind often discovers the hard way when nature is unhappy with Him... Elsewhere, in the bamboo groves surrounding the forest.

"Come on; we have to hurry. The festival is almost over and we'll miss our chance..."

"...I don't know, Uncle; the stories I hear..."

"Are just that, Saji: stories."

"And you can be so sure? Gen and Tshu have yet to return..."

"Heathens. They did not show respect as they should have. They angered the Kami. Let that be a lesson to you, boy. Your father and I - my brother - we walked every inch of this grove when we were boys, paying homage all the way and never once did any harm befall us. Not so much as a hungry wolf or poacher; and do you know why, Saji?"

"Why, uncle?"

"Respect. In this world, that is all that matters. We be but mere men; for all our so-called 'might', man is nothing without they that watch over him. And when we forget that and try to claim heaven as our own, they remind us how small we truly are..."

"...Uncle? Will this really work? I mean ever since the lagoon..." As the pair conversed, their dialog is interrupted by the sudden quieting of the woods around them; the boy, inexperienced, knew not what this omen foretold yet the older of them - an experienced hunter and outdoorsman - knew it well: something was coming. Something that reigned above all else in the woods, whose very presence stifled all sound and shushed the forest whole. Saji - a manchild of only fourteen - looked to his uncle for guidance.

He was surprised to find him not hold his bow at the ready, but knelt down in solemn prayer. "U-uncle...??!" "Respect, boy." The silence was all consuming; the only sound the mumbling prayers of his kneeling elder. And as if sensing his plea to heaven, the forest floor began shaking in time. Trees could be heard being shoved aside and uprooted. And yet the man did not budge though his young nephew seemed to have given up the ghost. Before long the darkness was split by a pair of hovering opals, a sickly sort of yellow fashioned in such a way as to resemble eyes.

And, still the man would not move, his faith in the old ways unshakable.

Yet, faith without foundation was a poor ally. Something like darkness snatched the man's body whole from where he knelt, the swiftness of it knocked the young Saji to the floor where the wind was partially stricken from him. With a head full of haze, the agonizing cries of what sounded like his faithful uncle tore the silence from him. He could not see...but, did not need to for the reality was all to apparent.

His uncle was dead.

Faced with the reality his elder had failed to appease the Kami, Saji fled into the night, too frightened too look back, to terrified to even think. He simply ran. And ran. And ran. All while a single voice whispered just behind his ear.

Tell Your Tribe. Tell Them All. Enter The Forest... And Die!!!

And yet another victim is claimed by the 'Spirit of the Lagoon'...

Queen Hera Bar
Lower East Side, NYC
Tuesday, 1:01 p.m.

Elsewhere, on the other side of the world, at a certain 'dive spot' bar in the Lower East Side of New York, things were pretty much going as they often did. "Huh...! Well, come on, pretty Ricky, this ain't a beauty contest!" Halo - kendo stick in hand - taunted his 'foe' for this evening who happened to be none other than Blake, a fellow Mongrel and brother-in-arm. The other Mongrels were out tending to their affairs and left the bar partially empty save for Blake, Halo...and judging by the leafy smell, Liam was about somewhere.

Where, though, he didn't much care at the moment, the walking Christmas tree could do whatever he wished.

The two swung and traded blows as they practiced their swordsmanship with each other; it was better to stay fresh than get stale out there and this way the two of them could do just that. Though from even back there the sound of the bar door opening and closing wasn't missed by his keen Lycan ears. Someone had just entered and from what he overheard, Liam greeted this person - whoever they were - before they left out again. "Hey, hold on a sec... think we got company..." Halo tosses his kendo stick at Blake so he can put it away for him [and, no he didn't even ask!] before heading out into the main area where Liam was.

"Hey, Bushroot, who was that...?" Though taking one look at Liam told the tale; the young prince stood there holding a package, a long, narrow item wrapped neatly like a gift. Halo took it for safety reasons [if it were a bomb or poison his healing factor would be a boon] and looked it over before unwrapping it to find within...was a katana. And, not just some bought-off-the-internet knockoff, but an authentic Edo period 'samurai sword'. These days, something like this would have been work a cool half mil on the collectors market; even more on the black market. Really, they were looking at a tried and true work of history, a piece of samurai culture thought lost to the world.

Someone somewhere basically sent them a big bag of money... And as Halo traded glances with Liam and Blake, he was pretty sure why. Further inspection reveals the package to also have a note inside, written in Japanese: '、ブレイブファイターズは、NARASAKI村はあなたのマイトが必要てください。あなたの崇高なパワーの支払いとしてこのハンブル剣を受け入れてください。' (Please, Brave Fighters, Narasaki Village Needs Your Might. Do Accept This Humble Sword As Payment For Your Sublime Power)

Thankfully, Halo spoke Japanese. "Looks like we got another case, B." He gave Liam a thoughtful look before continuing. "And let's take Bushroot, too; can't leave him here alone, anywayz. He'll wilt." Halo scoffed, studying the katana; something so priceless... as a form of payment, it was perhaps worth two jobs, maybe three... and here he had it without even setting foot on a plane. Whatever was bugging the people in Narasaki, it was worth their weight in gold.

"Ever been to Japan, Christmas tree?"

Carmichael Estate
Friday, 10:01 a.m.

"It's far too early in the morn' for this shit..."

Halo'd whisper to his teammate Armina as they stood by and watched the Carmichaels...well, be the Carmichaels. Eleanor and Vincent Carmichael, to be exact. "Come now, dear; must you chew so loudly? You'll make our guests think we're of poor breeding..." The mother chastised their young son as they ate breakfast. "Oh, leave the boy alone for once in his life. Besides, I doubt proper upbringing is something their lot has any inkling of...and therefore, have no need to be concerned over the lack of such." Halo leaned a bit closer to Armina.

"Do they realize we're standing right here?"

If they did, it didn't seem to make a damn bit of difference as the wealthy Carmichael's continued on like a family of rabid wolverines. "Do NOT tell me how to mother my own son! It's your fault he behaves as he does, you know!"

"My fault?? Woman, have you started your binge drinking earlier than usual? The boy obviously has fallen victim to YOUR overbearing need to smother him at every turn, and all that does is weaken a boy! He needs to be strong and of a keen mind, like his father."

"Hah! Keen mind my foot! You couldn't keen mind your way out of a soaking wet paper bag! Now hush your mouth and let me handle my son!"

"Woman, you will NOT speak to me that way in my own house! A man's home is his castle, and that, my little sot, makes me king around here. And don't you forget it!"

"King?? KING??! Hah, more of your DELUSIONS of grandeur. You aren't one-eighth the man you pretend to be! Mother was right, I should have married..."

"...Edwin, yes, yes, we ALL know the story; and had you, you'd be as penniless as he is! Of course, I don't see you doling out any divorce papers, despite all your talk of leaving the comfortable life I've erected around you. Nothing's stopping you, my dear. The door...is right there!" He pointed with his fork while their only son, a child by the name of Lamont, made airplane noises and played with his food. It was at this point Halo opted to speak up.

"Uh, yea, much as we love this heartfelt family moment, we WERE called here to do a job... and we'd like to begin." At this the entire room fell quiet, both husband and wife united as they gazed upon Halo with obvious disgust in their eyes. "How rude! Have you no manners? One does not discuss business affairs at the table! Really, now..."

"Oh, don't fret my, little buzzard, that one has no need for such courtesies in his line of work, and as such, cannot be expected to behave as a gentleman would. Very well; let us convene in my study where we can, as you put it, get down to business." Removing his apron, he rose as the help cleared the table, and headed out the door in silence followed by his wife.

A older man in a butler's uniform would escort them to the study in question. "This oughta be good."

Once inside Vincent would sit in his favorite chair as he prepared to address the pair of Mongrels regarding their presence in his estate; Eleanor entered, glass in hand, and sat across from them on the other side of the room. She looked Halo over with much more than abstract interest in her eyes. She...wanted more, it was obvious, and wasn't afraid to show it. Naturally, Halo noticed this too and shot Armina a glance. This just got better and better.

"So...Mr. Carmichael, what can we do for you?" The wealthy father produced a cigar, which after lighting it, did he inhale the robust smoke and exhale a $400 cloud of fumes.

"Well...to put it quite plainly, my wife, young child as well as myself have found ourselves the victims of what appears to be...a haunting. Now, I am not typically given to flights of fancy and talk of spooks and goblins, and yet, must at least consider what my eyes show me. And what they have shown me I cannot find any other word for except to call it a haunting. Strange lights and sounds with neither source nor sense to them. Rappings at doors where no one is present. And, I myself, along with my wife, were attacked. Not violently so, but disconcerting all the same."

"Wait, you both were victims of this...ghost?" Halo asked of the wife seated like a feline in heat on the couch behind him.

She allowed another swallow of her tonic before she replied. "...In a manner of speaking..."

"And, that means...?"

"Not so much attacked physically as...sexually." She hit Halo with a sultry look, as if she were somehow proud to have been the victim of this ghostly molester, proud to have attracted the lust of a dead man to the point that he returned from the hereafter just to bed her and wanted to see what sort of reaction this new man would have at the notion of her being engaged by a spirit.

"...Sexually? You mean...?"

"It fucked me."

"Eleanor, please! Show some decency! Really, I must apologize for my wife's tone...though she is not incorrect. I, too, was a victim of this...ghostly lover, let's just call it. Two weeks ago, these...'attacks' started. Before then it seemed content to wake us from our sleep with a harsh rapping against the walls or a harmless lights in the courtyard. However, it seems to have graduated to 'other' interests. And, to be quite honest, I fear what may come next..."

"You would."

"Damn you, woman! This isn't one your endless stream of Cabana boys; you are playing with forces not of this world...but, like the drunken WHORE you are, you actually THINK you can control them! And you say I have DELUSION of grandeur?"

The wife grew silent at these words. Just bore holes in her husband before putting her half-empty glass down and removed herself silently from the room; Vincent stalked her with his eyes until she was gone. "I do apologize for that, my good man, she can be a viper when she's drinking. Shall we continue?"

"Well, it's as I've said; starting from about two weeks ago the nuisances escalated to assaults of the sexual sort. I myself was accosted only once, and did not much enjoy it thank you very much...not sure about the wife, though. As for myself, I would see these spooks removed and soon, before they turn their sights onto my beloved son, Lamont."

"And, speaking of which, has the child seen or had any dealings with these spirits?"

"None that I can say; it seems only myself and Eleanor have the interest of these...entities. Even the help is ignored by them."

"So, they only target you and your wife? Hm... ok, we'll take your case..."

"Oh, dear God, thank y-..."

"...for 1.5 mil..."

"Nothing in life is free, eh?"

"You know it."

"Very well then. Rid me and my wife of these spooks. Please."

"When do you notice these spirits most?"

"At night. Only at night."

"Right. We'll need a map of the entire estate, every nook and cranny. Also I'd like to review the history of the manor, as far back as possible."

"Of course; in the meantime, I would see you housed here for the duration of your stay. Please, I insist." Halo gave no argument and he and Armina were led down the hall towards their rooms. During the walk, he'd address her.

"I'm gonna look these blueprints over; can you perhaps walk the grounds, see if you can pick anything up on the psychic hotline?"

For now, Halo would stay in his room, studying the maps the butler gave him, totally unaware of the presence keeping an eye on him through a peephole located in a painting in his given room.

"Now, THAT is a man..."

Queen Hera
Thursday, 5:35 p.m.

There was nothing like hanging with the homies. The small group spent yet another evening in the dive spot bar they called home, the doors open to the inhuman public as the crowd enjoyed itself, purchasing beer after beer, downing shots of liquor and smoking like a chimney, despite the former Mayor Bloomberg's no smoking indoors law. Heck, they weren't even licensed to sell alcohol in the first place. Kinda hard to get a certificate to sling ale to witches, monsters, and anything that went bump in the night anyways.

As the revelries went on in the bar, the Mongrels were busy conducting their business in the back away from prying eyes and nosy ears. Seated behind his desk, he addressed his chums regarding the info he came 'cross.

"Alright, guys, listen up: apparently, there's been some 'unexplained' killings in one'a the red states out somewheres in Bumfuck, Fuck County or some shit. Normally, I'd leave it to the local authorities, but it seems the killer has eluded them in ways that defy logic, not to mention the description given by a lucky survivor of the killer claiming it looked like a cross between a man and an animal. And, yanno what that means. We get to take a little Vay-Kay... Here's the skinny, Minnie: the slayings all occurred after dark, the victims were all young couples, some as young as their late teens, all the killings took place with a half-mile radius of one another and, according to autopsies, the deceased were having intercourse when they were attacked and killed. This is a vital clue as the area in which the slayings took place is a popular spot for young lovebirds who wanna stargaze or hold hands or something. And, get this: NO ONE else has ever been targeted or attacked except those few who were doing the business..."

"Which has me thinking... maybe we have an Incubus running loose? Though the M.O. doesn't fit; sex demons don't outright kill, not right away anyways. They prefer to attack those sleeping and ALWAYS target the sexually repressed... two kids doing the nasty shouldn't even be a blip on the radar. As well as the manner in which they were killed: gutted with a weapon police have been unable to identify. At any rate, we're gonna do something about it, so I'm giving this one to Blake and 'Mina and, heh, here's where it gets good: you're going on this one as a smoochy-kissy young couple backpacking across the country."

"Hey, don't look at me! It is what it is!" Though in truth, Halo was laughing on the inside. "Heh heh..." And, he wasn't alone. "Heh heh...!"

Colorado Springs, Colorado
Rural Outback
Monday, 2:13 a.m.

Three nights. And,still nothing. Not so much as a peep from a peeping Tom. Not too mention it seemed the murderer itself decided to take a short sabbatical as there hadn't been a single slaying since the pair of Mongrels arrived to investigate. Perhaps the local kids got the picture and decided to handle their affairs elsewhere; still, that didn't mean there wasn't a killer on the loose somewhere out there. Going under the guise of yet another googly-eyed pair of lovebirds, they'd arrive in town and spend a day or so establishing themselves as a pair of traveling lovebirds driving across America, visiting town after town and seeing the country with their own eyes.

Reason enough, it seemed, to place themselves in harm's way. Of course no one in the town would argue with them, though they'd receive a few warnings here and there about the recent string of killings, but not a bit more than that. So, when the nighttime came the team of Blake and Armina could do what needed to be done... of course, how well the pair got along was up to them...still, you could be assured somewhere in the world was a surly Werewolf laughing his butt off at the idea of those two playing kissy-face under a pale moon.

All for a good cause, of course! Wink!

With the lack of the killer showing up, perhaps it was a good idea to canvas the town, see who knows what and gather intel; according to police reports, one lone man managed to survive, a forty-something farmer who lived all alone on the edge of town. That might be a good place to start looking...

[ooc: so, as it's you guys and 'Halo' is 'elsewhere', I'll just be dropping hints for you guys to play off of to connect the dots as it were and move the story forwards. I'll also be NPCing any characters as needed, but you prolly guessed that already!]
