Alan Pearson

Alan woke with a start, looking around at his surroundings. It was bright morning, just the outskirt of New York, though most of the buildings were either rubble or barely standing. He had trouble remembering what happened, all he remembered was a bright light, and the shattering of windows, before silence. Yet, here he was, still living, and non mutated. He got off the ground and picked up a backpack and started walking down the deserted road. 5 days ago, America, if not all of the world, was decimated by atomic warheads, though Alan had no clue who fired them.

Alan walked for miles, trying to figure out what his next move would be, before saying to himself " I honestly don't know. guess I'll just walk until i either die, or have nowhere else to go." He took a look at his surroundings, and saw a sign, covered with ash, that said " welcome to Pennsylvania" Alan sat under the sign, tired from his trip, and stared at the surrounding country, looking for a single sign of life.

Friday looked down at the map she'd stashed in her pocket, the words and lines a bit blurry, but that could have been her eyes, or her hands shaking so badly it was hard to read anything. She licked her lips and glanced up, the sun glaringly bright in her eyes, damn the military a cough suddenly racked her body and she was forced to grip the bar she was leaned up against tightly as she tried to gain her breath.

When she'd finally began breathing somewhat normally she straightened up and wiped her mouth against the bandanna around her wrist, wincing as she remembered the IV there. Her eyes fell to her bag and she tried to determine whether or not she could plug into an IV bag again yet, she had stocked up, but she needed to be careful with it, she had only one more bag. It was worrisome, her hands were already shaking worse, and she still couldn't even think about eating real food.

Sighing shakily she got up from her spot, threw her bag on her shoulder and started walking again. She could faintly see a sign in the distance, and thats what she headed for.

It was when she wasn't far from it that her whole body started to...shudder...her jaw clenching so her teeth didn't chatter. She was just close enough to read the sign when her foot caught a piece of debris and she fell, sprawled on the hard ground, her bag on the ground at least five feet away. Her hands pressed against the ground and she tried to push herself up, but was racked by a violent shudder and fell back down. Looking up for her bag her hand reached out for it, just an inch away from the bag's strap, she groaned "crap..." she muttered, and blinked slowly as she shuddered once more, a cough racking through her once more.

Alan dozed off for a while, lost in his own thoughts, still attempting to figure out a plan. He started to drift off, before hearing a thud, somewhat close to him. He looked off, nearly missing her, only noticing her by the IV stand that appeared out of nowhere. He got up from the sign, and started sprinting towards the stand.

" Hey!!!" he Yelled, Running over to the stand. He saw a girl, hooked up to the IV stand, and a bag, which from his guess, contained nutrients. The girl was shaking violently, and having a coughing fit. " Jesus Christ, Are you alright." He said, look over her. He grabbed her by her arm and attempted to pull her up.

Oddly she hadn't even realized him until he gripped her by the arm in an attempt to help her, but her legs were weak and she was having trouble standing. Plus the coughs that still escaped her, "no...not exactly" she managed, in a hoarse voice between coughs. "my bag..." one hand came up to motion to the bag a bit shakily, "it's got my..." she coughed again and took a moment to catch her breath and try to stand by herself, after a moment she managed to shakily get a grip on equilibrium, and stop coughing.

"its got my last bag in it..." sort of half stumbling over to it she reached down to get it but didn't make it very far, she lost her balance and had to grip her IV stand to not fall over. "damnit...shoulve changed it earlier..." she muttered to herself, appearing completely unconcerned with the fact that she was shaking and didn't look the picture of health, other than the annoyance in her tone.

Alan noticed the fact she was having trouble standing, and held her up, though he was surprised she was able to talk, albeit in a hoarse voice. " Yea, kinda could guess that." He said, picking her bag up. As she was able to get her own balance, Alan reluctantly let go of her, wondering if he should keep helping her out.

He quickly opened the bag right after she nearly fell attempting to get it, and pulled out a IV bag, which he correctly guessed was full of nutrients. " crap.." he muttered to himself, trying to think of what to do. He was a med student, though he never exactly payed attention when they taught how to change these. He luckily was able to get it on correctly though, before saying " I'm going to guess there's a good reason why you can't get nutrients the regular way. I'm going off on a limb here and saying..." He paused for a moment, trying to remember what it's called. " Anorexia."

Alan sat back down right against a ruined building, before calmly saying " hey, whats your name?"

Coughing once more she cleared her throat, and smirked at him, knowing she didn't exactly look that great. Then sat down on something, a piece of debris but it was impossible to tell what it had been. She watched him replace the bag curiously, she could have done it, she'd watched nurses and doctors do it over and over. "could've done that sir...you didn't have to..." Really she wasn't that important, he didn't need to waste time on her, she blinked up at him. "oh yeah...um..." she cleared her throat again, before speaking "Anorexia...would be right..." Still shaking she leaned forwards onto her knees and tried to take deep breaths, her hands coming up to hold her forehead where a sheen of sweat had appeared without her notice.

Pushing her bleach blond bangs away from her face, and into her dark chocolate brown hair, she looked up at him with those shallow, empty blue eyes. "My...well...what I know of my name...is Alisson Friday...and im not sure about my last name. Most call me Friday but i really dont care..." She shrugged and lay her head on her knees, trying to lower the shakes back down to tremors, to calm herself. "yours?" She muttered.

He saw that she was watching him curiously when he replaced the bag, though he figured that, in her state, she probably would screw up. " I'm going to be honest, in your condition, I don't think you can." alan said, looking at her. " I mean, you can barely move your hand, much less replace that bag." he continued, before dropping it. He didn't respond when she confirmed that she had anorexia, though a slight smile crept across his face, that practically said " I knew it"

" well Friday, nice to meet you." He said, before saying under his breath " I think." He wondered if staying with her would be a good idea, since it was obvious she was going to need as much help as she could get, though it was also obvious she was going to slow him down. Alan suddenly remembered that he wasn't going anywhere in particular, just where ever life was. He suddenly realized she asked for his name, and quickly said " oh yea, I'm Alan." Alan heard his stomach growl, and opened up his backpack and looked through to see if he had anything to eat. He pulled out a can of diced peaches, though quickly put it away, figuring he should see if he could salvage anything. " I'll be right back." He said, sitting up, and walking around the building, to the door.

the door nearly fell of it's hinges as he walked it, and he turned on a flash light, illuminating the dark room. What he saw nearly made him scream though. he saw a creature, about the size of a dog, feasting on a dead body, who's eyes were staring right at the door, and also right at him. He looked at the creature, and quickly figured it wasn't a dog, since, for one thing, it had antennae's, and for another, it had 6 legs. Alan turned white as he realized what it was: a giant Ant, eating a dead body, who, from the looks of it, also killed the man he was looking at.

Alan attempted to sneak away from the creature, and quickly grabbed a nearby lamp, before charging at it, and beating it to death with it. Alan looked at the man, and walked over, before searching him for anything useful. not like he needed it. He was able to find a back of dried fruit and a 9mm pistol, but nothing else of worth. he quickly through it into his backpack and walked out of the room, still visibly scared. " Holy god, I don't think I'm ever going to look at a bug the same way again." He quickly said, sitting back down.

She grimaced down at the ground, weakness, she was weak right then, she was weak period, it wasn't something she loved. "Im sure..." was what she muttered in response, knowing that no one in this time would actually be thankful, or find it nice to meet her. Slowing people down, needing that extra bit of care, people didnt really like that, especially not in these times. When he spoke his name she looked up at him and the tilt of her lips indicated a smile, though the look in her eyes was more...sad...then her gaze was back on the ground. Her breathing was slowing and calming and when he said he'd be back she simply nodded and used the time to further stop the reaction she was having. As the cold milky liquid moved through her blood stream her shakes significantly dropped, her breathing has slowed to an almost normal rate, and her heart beat had slowed as much as it could.

By the time he returned she had returned to as normal as she ever got, but his exclamation startled her and she looked up in surprise. "and..why w-" She didnt even get to say it before her eyes widened and her gaze focused on something that was coming from the direction he came. It resembled an ant, but blown up like, a million times in size. "what. the fuck. is that?" the words came out in three sharp syllables, the curse that she normally wouldnt have said flew from her lips without hesitation and she only spared a moment of confusion for where it had come from. Had she said words like that often before the accident?

Then something incredible happened, that had a scream erupting from her mouth, the ant opened its mandibles and spit fire.

Alan turned around as she spoke and stared at it for a quick moment, before quickly picked up a brick and chucked it at the Ant, wanting to save his ammo for when he needed it. He missed the ant, but quickly picked up another brick, and threw that one too, though got the exact same results. " Damn, I really need to work on my Aim!" Alan exclaimed, trying again, finally hitting it, though all that did was stun it for a brief moment, after which the ant continued at them, quicker then before. Alan watched in a mixture of horror and fascination as the ant spit fire, though he didn't react quick enough, and soon his clothes were engulfed in flames.

Alan quickly hit the ground and rolled, somewhat dousing the flames, though his shirt was still flaming, and had somewhat major burns. He threw his shirt off, and finally shot at the ant, killing it in 5 shots. He stood there for a minute, and examined the ant, before sarcastically say " So that's why they're called fire ants! " He looked around the corner, and saw multiple ants climbing out of the house.

Alan turned around and grabbed the girl, before yelling " RUN!!!!!"
